5 Minute Ketchup Recipe

5 minute ketchup without the sugar!

Ketchup seems to be the magical condiment that gets any food into my son’s belly — from chicken and eggs to pork chops and steak.

To say it’s a staple condiment in my household is an understatement.

Many commercial condiments like ketchup have loads of sugar and artificial flavors so it can be difficult to find one that is up to “par.”

And since cutting ketchup out of the picture just doesn’t seem to be an option, I thought I would try to make our own. I played around with a few recipes I came across online and tried to balance the ingredients until I came up with something that, if I didn’t tell my husband I switched the ketchup, he wouldn’t know!

I kid you not when I say that this recipe tastes VERY similar to the store bought ketchup we were using.

Author:
Ingredients
  • 7oz tomato paste (homemade or store bought- only ingredient should be tomatoes)
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp raw honey
  • ½ tsp sea salt (this is my favorite)
  • ¼ tsp onion granules
  • ⅛ tsp all spice
  • ⅛ tsp ground cloves
Instructions
  1. Whisk together all ingredients, BUT the water, into a mixing bowl.
  2. Slowly add the water until you reach a desired consistency.
  3. Keep refrigerated and enjoy!
Notes
If you were working with a very smooth/watery paste to begin with, you may need to simmer the ketchup on the stove top to remove excess water from the paste. If you end up looking for a thicker ketchup, simply add a small amount of flour (wheat or gluten-free) at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

Considering that I believe ketchup unfit for human consumption, I was surprised that my grandson actually got me to make this version. Much to my surprise, this sauce was not just acceptable but actually brought a quality to the table. It is rich, tangy and with just enough tomato flavor so as not to be the dominate flavor over your food. I will still never buy the foul stuff in stores, but Ms. Loriel’s Ketchup will always be in my refrigerator.
