I just spent an amazing week up in Buffalo, NY with my little sister and her new baby, Willow. Prior to this, I haven’t seen my sister in over 2 years so as you can imagine it was a much, much needed trip. It was so crazy for me to see my little sister as a mother but I am so incredibly proud of her! I always knew my sister was an amazing person but when I saw the love that radiated out of her with Willow and how naturally mothering came to her, my heart overflowed with love and joy.
I had decided to come up right when Willow arrived because I remember how exhausted I was the first week I brought Andrew home. My mother-in-law helped me for a week and it made a tremendous difference so I wanted to be able to do that for my sister. It’s incredible how things work because the day I arrived in Buffalo, Jacqueline was released from the hospital. I mean seriously– could you get more perfect timing??
When I reflect back to the first 8 months of Andrew’s life, I was completely clueless as to what real food was and how important it is to a growing baby and nursing mother — especially the consumption of bone broth. One of my missions while I was visiting was to load her up on tons of home cooked food and to prepare and freeze as many meals as I could for later. I remember the first week being easy because my mother-in-law was around to help and cook. However the real test was when everyone had to leave and I was left there with a new baby and lack of sleep. That is when prepared food is a life saver — not to mention that an adequate diet is necessary to support breast milk production.
The Importance of Bone Broth for Nursing Mothers
As I was getting ready for my trip I made a list of things I wanted to make for my sister to ensure she was properly nourished in my care. One big concern of mine was having homemade bone broth for her — I knew I’d be completely unfamiliar with farms and food sources in the area so I decided to get in touch with a company I’ve been establishing a relationship with. Barebones Broth makes fresh delicious, gelatinous broth weekly using only the highest quality bones and ships them across the country. I was so excited when Ryan agreed to send me some broth while I was up there. It took a huge weight off of my shoulders knowing that I’d have nutrient-dense broth to give my sister and Willow.
The reason I was so adamant about making sure Jacqueline had broth is because broth is literally the healer of all healing. As you know (or can imagine) making a little baby for 9 months, giving birth and then being the main source of nourishment for this new miracle can be hard on a mama’s body. That’s not even counting if the pregnancy and delivery was harder than normal.
The most beautiful thing about broth is the fact that it is so easily assimilated in the body — meaning, the body naturally absorbs all the goodness found in broth without working to absorb it. This is fantastic news for a postpartum mama who has literally given most of herself to form the baby and now has to nourish baby through bouts of exhaustion.
Broth contains loads of blood-building properties to restore the blood and fluid lost in giving birth. The broth contains minerals and nutrients to strengthen the body and it is deeply hydrating for breastfeeding moms who require extra fluid intake for breast milk production. The cartilage found in broth helps with strengthening the bones and supporting tendons and joints postpartum. If you want a more in-depth explanation about the specifics of what you can find in broth, check out this article from Barebones Broth.
Making your own bone broth is really, really easy. If you’ve never made it before I encourage you to have a look at these posts:
- Double batch bone broth
- Chicken stock for the less adventurous
- Heads, feet, necks.. oh my! Using odds and ends to make stock
However, I understand not everyone has the time or resources to make it which is why I’ve partnered with my new favorite company Barebones Broth.

I need some broth for these bones of mine.

Thank you for sharing, Amy!
July 9, 2014 @ 3:35 am Ashley Gallagher
Great post! Any tips on how to get your toddler to drink it. He is 15 months and still nursing frequently. I’ve tried bone broths with him since he was 6 months and he has never been a fan ๐
July 9, 2014 @ 11:03 am Loriel
Hey Ashley. What if you tried making rice with broth in replacement of water? I always do that because I know that Andrew is really finicky about the straight up broth. Or, you can try and put already made rice IN the broth. So it’s like a soupy rice. I’ve also put it in popsicles but you’ve got to make sure you put fruits with a strong flavor to counteract the broth taste. I hope this helps and don’t ever stop trying!
July 9, 2014 @ 3:38 am bj
I’ve never had bone broth before. I am new to the “real food” world. I’m currently nursing my six month old but have had serious gallbladder problems for half his life, making my diet very limited. I haven’t been able to go “real food” yet because of this. Does bone broth have any fat in it? I need a good source of nutrition but can’t handle any fats right now. How many grams per serving? (And what serving size) thank you!
July 9, 2014 @ 11:05 am Loriel
I’m not quite sure if broth has fat in it but I know that even on the most healing diets, broth is beneficial because your body doesn’t need to fight it. Have you heard of the GAPS diet? Here’s a link to the site: http://www.gapsdiet.com/. In this diet, it is very restricted but the consumption of bone broth is heavy to heal. I wish I had more info for you but will keep my eyes peeled.
July 9, 2014 @ 1:23 pm Larissa parker
I’ve just started learning about the amazing benefits of bone broth. I would love to try this as I’m a nursing mom and need as much healthy nutrition as I can get!
July 9, 2014 @ 8:23 pm Jessica

July 14, 2014 @ 2:16 am Malka
sounds good and THE EASIEST way to have bone broth ๐
July 14, 2014 @ 2:51 am Diana cote
What a wonderful idea, I tried making my own broth but it didn’t come out very good. Must have been the chicken or something. My grands always made her own broths and gelatin, they were delicious. She also went through spurts of growing chickens, ducks, rabbits and unfortunately I saw her turn them to meat, I thought they were pets. Lol
July 14, 2014 @ 4:17 am Renee Bertola
I am excited to try bone broth, I have never had it before but hear many wonderful things about it.
July 14, 2014 @ 4:35 am Tracy Spangler
I am most excited about winning the bone broth because I have some very serious health issues, and am in constant pain. I am due to have a second brain surgery before the end of the year, and while I love cooking for my family, lately I have been too overwhelmed with exhaustion to get much of anything done. I’ve also learned my liver is very toxic, so I could use all the natural, healing health benefits as possibly right now. Thank you!
July 16, 2014 @ 8:27 am Loriel
Sending my love and healing vibes to you. <3333
July 14, 2014 @ 6:06 am Nathalie
I am most excited about the beef broth. I have never made my own and would love to try it. I already know I will love the chicken broth!
July 14, 2014 @ 10:46 am Anela
Thank you so much! I would love to try this, I have heard much and read much but have not made it myself as I dont have enough freezer space to keep bones until we have enough. I’m waiting to invest in a reefer.
July 14, 2014 @ 11:07 am Christine
I love bone broth but don’t have a lot of luck in making it myself.
July 16, 2014 @ 8:26 am Loriel
What kind of problems are you having? Maybe I can help?
July 14, 2014 @ 9:12 am Kelly
Would love to win some bone broth
July 14, 2014 @ 9:35 am Electra
I am an ER nurse and 16 wks along with my first bundle of joy. I would be forever grateful for this help and blessing during this chaotic time in my life. Nursing is a priviledge and I would like to not only nourish myself the right way but my newborn as well!! ๐
July 14, 2014 @ 10:00 am Chris O
I’m new to bone broth & have never had anyone’s but my own. It would be great to have something to compare it to to see if I’m doing it right. (It’s so different from regular broth.)
July 14, 2014 @ 10:16 am Sara
Quite simply because I’ve only ever tasted the bone broth I’ve made and would like to see what others taste like.
July 14, 2014 @ 11:33 am Melissa
I will probably freeze this and use it once my baby is here! Either way though, it’s too hot to make broth right now ๐ Who am I kidding, I’ll probably make some anyway soon.
July 16, 2014 @ 8:25 am Loriel
Haha, I feel like it’s never too hot to make broth. We use so much of it all the time!
July 14, 2014 @ 12:59 pm Jeannie
Very interesting and informative. Thank you!
July 14, 2014 @ 1:07 pm Ayesha

It would definitely help if I won because I try to make bone broth as often as I can but i don’t get to make it as often as I need to!
July 14, 2014 @ 2:58 pm Corina
I am so glad to have found out about this! I have had a heck of a time making my own on a regular basis and my crockpot died in a tragic stovetop melting episode ๐ Even if I don’t win, I need to order this ASAP!
July 14, 2014 @ 4:51 pm Christina S.
Um…Yes please! Currently nursing baby #6 and this would be awesome! Thanks so much! ๐
