Fun, aren’t they? Who hasn’t experienced them at least once! While having fun in the sun it is easy to underestimate its power and the damage it can cause.
We are taught to apply sunscreen to prevent anywhere from sunburns to skin cancer, however, we now know that most conventional sunscreens are laden with harmful chemicals, as well as products marketed to relieve sunburns. Even when following good sun safety and using the most natural sunscreens you or yours may still end up with sunburns.
Besides being uncomfortable to right down painful and unsightly, the danger with sunburns is that the skin being the largest organ in your body acts as a barrier; and when compromised, it can’t do its job well, not to mention the skin itself may be susceptible to infection.
How to Treat Sunburns
Most likely any burns due to the sun will be either first or second degree burns, if third degrees burns occur they need to be assessed and treated by medical professionals immediately.
- Act quickly, the longer you wait to treat the more damage that can be done to the skin
- Clean area with cool water only
- Cool affected area. This is very important—if you use any type of healing ointment before, you are essentially trapping heat
- Apply treatment such as this sunburn relief tonic
- Moisturize affected area often. Make sure to use a moisturizer that doesn’t contain toxic chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and or alcohol. Choose a natural moisturizer, plain coconut oil works great!
- Protect skin. If you are going to be exposed to the sun again make sure to seek shade and apply a natural sunscreen, and reapply often.
Sunburn Relief Tonic
- 2 tsp of aloe vera gel (find it here)
- 3 tsp of black tea (find it here)
- 1 tsp of liquefied coconut oil (find it here)
- 6 drops of pure lavender essential oil (find it here)
- 2 drops of pure peppermint essential oil (find it here)
- 2 capsules of pure vitamin E (find it here)
Brew black tea and allow to cool off completely. In a small empty glass container not used for food (I used a small tomato paste glass jar, washed) add all ingredients and shake vigorously until emulsified. With the help of small funnel transfer tonic to a 1 oz spray bottle.
Notes and tips:
You can use green tea in place of black tea if desired. If you have an aloe vera plant, use it! My aloe vera plant is too small still so I used store bought, just make sure it is pure aloe vera gel. Keep in the refrigerator to increase cooling effect and shake well before each use.
Why These Particular Ingredients?
Aloe vera is one of the most trusted natural remedies for sunburn; it provides immediate relief and hydrates skin.
Black tea contains tannic acid which helps draw out the heat from the burn and reduces inflammation.
Coconut oil helps with dryness and protects skin, also, coconut oil is revered to have many antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.
Lavender essential oil aids in the healing process and it may prevent pealing.
Peppermint essential oil has a cooling effect on the skin.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that aids in skin regeneration while it moisturizes.
All these ingredients provide healing and protection. This tonic is light yet it provides the necessary moisture for the skin without leaving behind a greasy residue like medicated ointments do. I had to put this tonic to the test a few days ago after my husband got a sunburn on his neck while we were visiting a farm, needless to say it worked great and no signs of peeling as of yet!
