I used to be able to eat a whole bowl of sour cream mixed with Lipton French Onion Dip in one sitting.
Oh, yeah.. those were the days.
Something about the crunch of the salty potato chip (you know I love me some crunchy foods) and that creamy, onion-ey flavor together, would basically make me addicted.
I would literally have to force myself away from the dip bowl because I was so addicted to it. Yeah, it was a borderline problem.
However, back in those days, I paid no attention to ingredient labels and didn’t have a clue about GMOs. Have you ever taken the moment to actually look at the ingredient list of Lipton French Onion Dip??
Holy GMO batman.
For reals. It’s loaded with preservatives, GMOs, maltodextrin, MSG, and all other nasty things us crunchy folk try their best to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately, even the “better” alternative contains “organic” maltodextrin. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve used the better alternative before and it’s really a much better choice if you had to pick between GMO-ipton or the better alternative.
But, naturally, I wanted to create a better version. For a long time now I’ve been using a french onion dip that actually uses fresh onions cooked down in butter for 30 minutes (you might want to wipe up that drool over there) but, the combination of all that butter and all that sour cream leaves me with a stomachache.
I’m not 100% lactose-intolerant but I am definitely sensitive to dairy. I didn’t know I could get any more addicted to french onion dip but when you’ve actually made a real food version of it using butter and onions…. well, now it’s become a problem.
There’s no such thing as moderation. It’s like my mind loses control and goes into automatic mode.
Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch. Dip, cru– Oh my gosh, my stomach hurts. Where’s the bathroom?
No, but really, that’s how it goes.
I decided to turn to my kitchen and figure out a way to make a dried pack version so hopefully my stomach would tolerate it a little bit better (and it does, I just can’t go overboard).
This real food style homemade french onion dip really does taste better than GMO-ipton and even better than the organic store-bought alternative. For the most part, it requires ingredients you probably have sitting in your kitchen cabinet, but there are a few “unusual” spices and herbs that add the flavor punch like turmeric, celery seed, and dried parsley.
It takes a minute or so to mix the ingredients together and then you’ve got yourself an amazingly delicious homemade french onion dip without any added extra junk. You could even make a big batch, jar it, and give it as a gift to your foodie friends. Who doesn’t love clean food as a gift?
So, what are you waiting for? Get to whipping up and enjoy the glorious rhythm of…
Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch. Dip, crunch.
